The best travel stories usually begin with failure. This is inconvenient. We spend enormous amounts of time trying to prevent exactly this. Reservations. Confirmations. Backups. Insurance. Weather apps. Maps. Schedules. Then years later, nobody tells the story about the trip where every reservation worked. We remember the disaster. The storm. The missed flight. The hotel mistake. The car that broke down. The restaurant that turned out not to exist. Human memory has a sense of humor. This is why I now try to distinguish between a bad experience and a good story in progress. Not always successfully. When you are standing in an airport at midnight and your flight has been canceled, it does not feel charming. It feels like civilization has betrayed you. The future story value is difficult to appreciate. But sometimes the trip improves because the plan collapses. You stay somewhere unexpected. Meet someone. Drive instead of fly. Eat somewhere random. See a place you never intended to see. <\/p>\n
Travel is full of alternate timelines. The perfect itinerary eliminates most of them. This is why I like leaving some open space. Not total chaos. I am not backpacking through a war zone with one sock and optimism. I enjoy reservations. I enjoy comfort. But I also enjoy the possibility that Tuesday is not fully decided. Travel with another person reveals everything during failure. This is why a disastrous trip can be romantically useful. Anyone can be charming beside an infinity pool. Show me the man when the luggage is in another country. Now we have data. Does he become furious? Blame everyone? Panic? Or does he shrug and say, “Well, I guess we’re buying toothbrushes. ” Very attractive. Calm is sexy. So is humor. Especially humor during inconvenience. I remember trips less by perfection than by how we handled imperfection. The rainstorm becomes romantic if you laugh and run through it. The terrible hotel becomes funny if both of you agree it is terrible. The restaurant disaster becomes a story if someone finds a better place around the corner. <\/p>\n
Compatibility is partly shared interpretation. Two people can experience the same inconvenience and live in different realities. One person thinks: Everything is ruined. The other thinks: This is ridiculous. That difference matters. I want the second person. Mostly because I want to be the second person too. I do not always achieve this. Sometimes I become hungry. Hunger damages philosophy. But I try. There is a useful question when travel goes wrong: Can this actually hurt us? Or is it merely annoying? These categories are often confused. Lost reservation? Annoying. Rain? Annoying. Delayed luggage? Usually annoying. Actual danger? Different category. Save panic for danger. This conserves energy. I learned this slowly. Experience teaches proportion. When you are younger, every disruption can feel enormous because you have fewer reference points. Later you know: We will solve it. We may complain. We may pay too much. We may eat something disappointing. We will probably survive. This is reassuring. <\/p>\n
Also, luxury travel has its own comic disasters. People imagine expensive trips as flawless. No. Money reduces friction. It does not repeal weather. Boats still move. Planes still delay. Hotels still lose things. Beautiful restaurants still occasionally produce terrible service. The ocean remains completely unimpressed by your reservation. Nature is very grounding that way. Sometimes the most absurd travel stories happen precisely because expectations were high. The more glamorous the setting, the funnier the failure. Formal clothes. Storm. No car. Now walk. Excellent. There is a photograph somewhere waiting to become legendary. I think this is why flexibility may be the most useful travel luxury. Not the suite. The ability to change course. Stay another night. Leave early. Hire the car. Take the train. Book somewhere else. Money helps with this. Attitude helps more. I also think bad travel moments deepen relationships faster than perfect ones. You see someone tired. Unshowered. Hungry. Stressed. No performance left. If you still like each other there, promising. <\/p>\n
Maybe travel is intimacy under unusual conditions. You share space. Decisions. Uncertainty. Time. Lots of time. You learn whether the person needs constant activity or can sit quietly. Whether they pack reasonably or appear to be relocating permanently. Whether they are ready on time. This is important. Whether they become tyrannical when hungry. Also important. Whether they can laugh. Most important. Because eventually something will go wrong. Not only traveling. Life. Plans fail. Bodies fail. People disappoint. Weather arrives. You need someone who can adapt. Maybe the disastrous vacation is a tiny rehearsal. Can we remain a team when the itinerary disappears? Can we still have fun? Can we look at each other in a bad situation and start laughing? That is a wonderful kind of trust. So I no longer fear travel disasters quite as much. I still prefer things to work. Let us be clear. But if they don’t? Fine. We’ll solve it. Maybe we’ll get a story. Years later, perhaps we’ll sit at dinner and say: “Remember that terrible hotel?” And immediately laugh.
