Sometimes. It is also sleeping well. This is less photogenic. I have become increasingly interested in the difference between looking luxurious and feeling luxurious. They overlap. But not always. A room can cost a fortune and still feel stressful. A simple afternoon can feel abundant. So what actually makes life luxurious? Time, for one thing. Unhurried time. The ability to sit at lunch without watching the clock. To take the scenic route. To sleep when you’re tired. To stay another night. To spend an afternoon with someone you love without needing to accomplish anything. Time is the luxury underneath most other luxuries. Money often helps buy it. But then you have to actually use it. This is where people get into trouble. They earn more. Build more. Optimize more. Become increasingly efficient. Then fill every recovered minute. Very impressive. Possibly missing the point. Space is luxurious too. Physical space, certainly. A quiet room. A view. A comfortable bed. But emotional space matters more. Being around people who do not constantly demand performance. Relationships where silence is allowed. A life with enough margin that one inconvenience does not destroy the week.

That feels rich. Health may be the most obvious luxury and the easiest to ignore while you have it. Waking up without pain. Walking. Breathing easily. Eating. Sleeping. Using your body without thinking about it. These seem ordinary until they are not. Then they become priceless immediately. Human beings are strange that way. We adapt to gifts until they become background. Maybe gratitude is simply moving them back into the foreground. Privacy is luxurious. So is being unreachable occasionally. There is something deeply restful about knowing nobody needs anything from you for a few hours. No messages. No requests. No decisions. Just absence. I suspect privacy will become more valuable as technology makes everyone more accessible. The rarest room may eventually be the one nobody can enter digitally. Beauty makes life feel luxurious too. Not necessarily expensive beauty. Flowers. Light. Music. A beautiful street. A well-set table. Fresh sheets. A sunset. Architecture. A dog asleep in a patch of sun. A man you like walking toward you.

Aesthetics change mood. We are sensory animals. Why pretend otherwise? Good food helps. Obviously. But again, price is not the point. The best tomato at the right moment can compete with elaborate cuisine. A perfect peach. Warm bread. Coffee when you really need coffee. Luxury is partly intensity of appreciation. If you stop noticing, nothing is luxurious anymore. Friendship is wildly luxurious. People who know your history. People you don’t have to explain yourself to. People who answer. People who show up. People who can hear the same story again because apparently you are not finished telling it. Long friendship contains a kind of wealth that cannot be manufactured quickly. It requires time. So does family when you’re lucky enough to have good relationships there. Shared history is expensive in years. Love is luxurious. Not because it is rare in some melodramatic sense. Because being loved creates permission to relax. To be known and still wanted. That is extraordinary.

Romantic love, family love, friendship, animals—different forms, same miracle. Another living creature has decided: You matter to me. We should not get too accustomed to this. Freedom is perhaps the greatest luxury. Being able to leave. Being able to stay. Being able to choose your work, your city, your companions, your schedule. Money contributes enormously to this. So does health. So does courage. Sometimes people technically have choices and still cannot make them. Freedom requires inner resources too. I think curiosity makes life luxurious. A curious person lives in a larger world. There is always another thing to learn. Another place. Another idea. Another person. Another question. Boredom becomes less powerful. This may be one reason I value curiosity so much. It is portable wealth. You can bring it anywhere. Humor too. Imagine possessing the ability to make a bad situation enjoyable. That is almost magical. Funny people transform experience. A delayed flight becomes material. An awkward dinner becomes a story. A mistake becomes something you remember fondly. Humor is emotional alchemy. Maybe the richest people are the ones with the best range. They can appreciate the suite and the roadside diner. Black tie and bare feet. Champagne and coffee. Grand adventure and quiet Sunday. They are not dependent on one version of pleasure. They carry enjoyment with them. That seems more secure than luxury requiring a specific setting.

I also think enough is luxurious. This may be the most difficult one. Enough money. Enough attention. Enough success. Enough beauty. Enough proof. Humans are built to move the line. A little more. Then a little more. Then somehow the life you once dreamed of becomes insufficient because the comparison group changed. That is dangerous. The ability to look around and say, This is good, might be one of the rarest forms of wealth. Not complacency. Appreciation. You can still want more. You just don’t postpone happiness until it arrives. So yes, I love beautiful things. I love travel. Hotels. Restaurants. Clothes. Wonderful rooms. Comfort. I hope I never become embarrassed about enjoying them. But the older I get, the less confused I am about what they are. Enhancements. Not foundations. The foundations are ancient. Health. Time. Freedom. Love. Friendship. Curiosity. Beauty. Peace. A little excitement. Someone to laugh with. Enough money that ordinary life is not constantly frightening. Enough wisdom to know when you already have something good. That is a luxurious life. Everything else is decoration. Beautiful decoration, hopefully. I am still keeping the good sheets.

Luxury is a beautiful hotel. Sometimes. It is also sleeping well. This is less photogenic.
